F u n d a m e n t a l s .... F u n d a m e n t a l s... F U N D A M E N T A L S !

The foundation of any great golf swing starts with the fundamentals of alignment, good grip, tempo, balance, flexibility, and one other key element ....A WELL BALANCED FINISH.

At Bergen Golf and Fitness Academy we take a reverse approach to teaching the student a solid golf swing. We do not over analyze the positions and parts of the swing; instead we have the student focus on the END of the golf swing. We encourage them to recognize how a well balanced finish position should feel, weight transferred completely from the right side to the left (for a right handed person) ....belt buckle facing the target... and finishing up on your right toe. If you can get to, and more importantly feel this position, it will be easier to master the other important positions. In fact, if you can achieve the finish ... the rest will follow easily.

gi2_thumbHave you ever noticed how people admire the flexibility and the finish of Ben Hogan, Fred Couples, Ernie Els, Tiger, Retief Goosen, or any other great player? The finish "feels" easy if you are not entirely focused on the positions involved with "hitting" the ball and where the ball may or may not go. Focusing on the finish takes the tension and stress out of your swing. Essentially, you are focused on the motion and flexibility required in getting to a well balanced FINISH position and not the result of the golf shot. As you get more comfortable with this motion process you will not have to worry about ball direction. It will simply be on line to the target.

The next time you are watching a PGA Tour pro hit a golf ball, DO NOT look at the ball flight, but rather at the way he or she holds their FINISH. If you find yourself admiring the FINISH; you will certainly admire the accuracy of the shot.

Too many students tend to be overly focused on the positions of the golf swing, namely the takeaway, at the top and the position at impact. All are extremely important and critical elements. However, if you can feel and are flexible enough to achieve the finish position, and hold it for 2-3 seconds without falling over, the rest of the positions will fall into place and can be adjusted as you move forward in the instruction. It is a swing

...one continuous motion, from start to finish, made up of several different positions.

So many players get frustrated over hitting fat or skulled shots. If this is you, a ventured guess would be that your lack of flexibility, strength, and fundamental balance is poor...at the beginning, throughout and especially at the FINISH. Both fat and skulled shots can be attributed to the lack of or improper weight transfer. Once you feel what the well balanced finish position is, and you apply the other fundamentals, the weight transfer will be automatic.

In short..YOUR FINISH... IS YOUR BEGINNING
